When Bungie announced that it was splitting from current publisher Activision, there were a lot of questions regarding what that would mean for the future of Destiny 2 and the Destiny franchise. Luke Smith, who was the creative director of Destiny 2, addressed fans under his new title of Destiny Franchise Director and gave a preview of the journey ahead for the Destiny franchise in Bungie’s weekly blog.
As many assumed, Bungie is currently working on the content that is coming to Destiny 2 as part of the Annual Pass, which is comprised of two more seasons of content similar to what fans have seen this season with Black Armory. While Smith didn’t address just how far the commitment with Activision goes, considering that Activision studio Vicarious Visions is working on the final content drop of the Annual Pass, it’s a safe assumption that Activision and Bungie will remain involved until at least all the Annual Pass content launches.
As for the long-term vision, Smith said that Bungie is committed to the Destiny franchise. There wasn’t any reason to think otherwise but considering that Bungie is walking away from its partnership with Activision with full self-publishing rights for Destiny it wasn’t completely clear. However, according to Smith:
While some analysts in the gaming industry are predicting that there will be a Destiny 3 and that it will release in 2020, the road ahead is still a mystery until Bungie pulls back the curtain on exactly what the future of Destiny will look like, whether that’s a full-fledged numbered entry in the series or if the developer will take an expansion-based route like World of Warcraft.
“Long-term, Bungie is committed to Destiny. We created the universe and we hold its future entirely in our hands. The vast majority of the team is hard at work envisioning future experiences, enemies, and ways to play the Guardian you’ve been building since 2014. We’re going to keep doing that.”
Players can rest assured that they will be getting all the content promised in this Year 2 of Destiny 2 and that Destiny will remain Bungie’s focus for the foreseeable future.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
