Season of the Splicer recently arrived in Destiny 2 and it introduced (or reintroduced, depending on how you look at it) a character that had long been mentioned but had never been given a proper welcome–until now.
Mithrax is the Fallen Kell of the House of the Light, an Eliksni faction that rejected the call of Darkness and seeks to return to the Light of the Traveler. He’s the only Fallen leader to ally themselves with the Guardians in their fight against the forces that besiege the Last City, and he’s a powerful Splicer to boot.
To newcomers, it might seem like Mithrax came out of nowhere, but Destiny 2 veterans will recognize the name from many lore books and even a quest or two that’s long since been placed in the Destiny Content Vault. To those blueberries looking for some insight into Season of the Splicer’s namesake, read on.
From House of Wolves to House of Light
Mithrax wasn’t always a Kell. He got started as a Vandal in the House of Wolves–a house that would eventually be defeated by the Awoken during the Reef Wars. The Dreaming City lore books speak of a Vandal called Misraaks who was captured by the Awoken Sjur Eido, who surprised Misraaks by showing both kindness and mercy despite. Eido even saved Misraaks from suicide at one point, and the two became close friends. It is Eido that gave Misraaks the name Mithrax due to her difficulty pronouncing the Eliksni syllables.
But then Eido died and the House of Wolves rebelled against the Awoken. After that tumultuous time, Mithrax joined the House of Dusk along with many of his former Wolves, rising to the rank of Captain. This is where the Guardian first meets Mithrax on Titan where he was leading a Fallen team to locate the same methane reactor the Guardian had been assigned to repair.
During the “Enemy of my Enemy” quest, the Guardian comes across Mithrax and his Fallen squad several times, always seeming to be one step behind the clever Captain. At one point, Ghost accidentally frees Mithrax from a Golden Age security system, and later the Guardian can choose to help either a Hive Knight or Mithrax as the two battle just outside the contested methane reactor.
The canonical decision is to kill the Knight and help Mithrax, who shows his gratitude for saving him by leaving the methane reactor for the Guardian to repair.
After Titan, Mithraks abandons the House of Dusk and travels to the Tangled Shore where he reflects on being saved by a Guardian. He eventually decides that humanity is not the true enemy of Eliksni survival. He then meets a Hunter and a Warlock, forming the very first inter-species fireteam, and after journeying throughout the Tangled Shore, vows to work with humanity and fight for the Light of the Traveler.
Mithrax founded the House of Light, offering to help any Eliksni willing to reject their piratical ways and instead help humanity rather than hurt it. The first example of Mitrhax’s direct intervention for the benefit of humanity occurred during the Zero Hour mission in Season of the Drifter, where Mitrhax warns the Guardian of a House of Devils group that was trying to steal a preserved SIVA weapon from the Old Tower.
Season of the Splicer
Mithrax returned once again in the most recent Destiny 2 season. After the Last City comes under attack by the Vex, Ikora Rey reaches out to Mithrax for help. As the last Splicer, Mithrax has the innate ability to manipulate machines and might be the only one who can save humanity from living in perpetual darkness.
It turns out both Ikora and Mithrax have been keeping tabs on one another. In return for helping humanity, Ikora provides the House of Light with a settlement inside the City’s walls. For the first time, you can see Fallen in the Tower, although this close proximity has strained Eliksni and human relations to what might be the breaking point.
Besides being a Splicer, we also learn that Mithrax has a daughter. Named Eido in honor of his deceased Awoken companion that showed him such kindness so long ago, Eido serves as a tour guide for the House of Light. She also reveals aspects of Eliksni culture that had long been a matter of speculation, such as the importance of Ether in Eliksni development.
Mithrax frequently speaks directly to the Guardian about current events at The Helm, so check back in with the House of Light servitor to learn more.
