This article contains major spoilers for Destiny 2: Beyond Light

Destiny 2: Beyond Light brought quite a few bombshells for the franchise’s lore alongside all of the gameplay changes that came with the expansion. Players got to learn of Banshee-44’s origins, how Exos are created, and who the Exo Stranger is.

The Exo Stranger is one of the highlights of Beyond Light’s campaign. Her backstory is a highlight for Destiny 2’s storytelling, giving players ample dialogue in-game and lore entries that explain her backstory. Now that she finally has time to explain why she didn’t have time to explain, here are ten facts about the Exo Stranger uncovered in Destiny 2’s Beyond Light expansion.

10 Who Is The Stranger?

As revealed during the Beyond Light campaign, the Stranger is none other than Elisabeth Bray. The middle grandchild of Clovis Bray I, Elizabeth spent her years developing technology for the Bray family before she was turned into an Exo.

Her Exo body was the first to be modeled after the owner’s original body. This allowed her to overcome Dissociative Exomind Rejection (DER for short) that plagued earlier Exo models. After a major outing with a Vex invasion on Europa, she experienced the end of everything with the arrival of the Darkness. In a sort of Groundhog Day scenario, Elisabeth is sent back in time to discover a means of stopping the Darkness. After a countless number of timeline loops, she encounters the Young Wolf—starting the events of the original Destiny.

9 How She Became An Exo

Turning into an Exo wasn’t an easy choice for Elisabeth. Lore entries and dialogue from Beyond Light mention her father’s struggle with the “Clovis Curse,” a strain of prion insomnia that was birthed from genetic modification conducted by Clovis Bray I.

Experiencing the same initial signs of the disease as her father, Elisabeth was met at an impasse: wait for technology to get better to help with the disease or become an Exo. With some aggressive convincing from Clovis Bray I, Elisabeth reluctantly agreed to the latter and became an Exo.

8 She Killed Ana Bray

It is revealed during the Beyond Light campaign that the Stranger’s original timeline involved Eris Morn and Ana Bray serving the Darkness. Ana’s fascination with her family eventually led her to discover the Darkness, likely in the Deep Stone Crypt.

Ana Bray eventually becomes a spy for Eris and kills Mara Sov, delivering a large blow to the cabal of Guardians still loyal to the Light. In an act of desperation, Elisabeth killed her sister to try to salvage the war. It wasn’t successful. The impact of that decision still affects her to this day. This is also why Elisabeth decided to confront her sister outright about her past in Beyond Light, hoping that would sway her away from the Darkness in the future.

7 She’s Stuck In A Time Loop

The Stranger is in a perpetual Groundhog Day situation in the Destiny universe. She has experienced the end of everything countless times only to be brought back in time to the events right before the original Destiny. Why this time loop happens is currently unknown, although Elisabeth has always had a complicated relationship with timelines as seen with the lore surrounding Worldline Zero.

Every time she loops back from a failed timeline, her memory of that timeline becomes hazy. This became such a large issue that she either created or found a device to help with remembering past timelines. She has tried a wide range of tactics such as befriending Ikora Rey, encouraging Guardians to destroy the Black Heart and witnessing the birth of Darkness Guardians, and spending timelines simply planning her next approach. With how many timeline shenanigans have occurred during Year 3 of Destiny 2, there’s a good chance that we might witness the end of this loop in future DLC.

6 Not A Lightbearer

Her ability to wield Stasis is not indicative of Elisabeth’s relationship to the Traveler, far from it. The Exo Stranger is not a Guardian. She has no Ghost to watch over her and no innate means of using the Light. Elisabeth’s ability to wield Stasis is due to utilizing shards of the Darkness itself, which is the same way Eramis wields the Darkness during the Beyond Light campaign.

5 Designed Stealth Tech During The Golden Age

Elisabeth’s earlier years were spent devising technology for Clovis Bray. This came in the form of weapons, Sparrows, and even ships. While creating those items isn’t surprising on its own, what’s odd is she designed stealth technology for BrayTech spaceships.

The Eon Trespass and the Shadow Trespass are two ships she is responsible for designing, both of which utilize panels that aid in avoiding detection from ship scanners. Keep in mind that this was done during the Golden Age, a period devoid of conflict.

4 Helped Create Various Weapons

No Time to Explain isn’t the only weapon that the Exo Stranger has altered. She is responsible for the existence of Worldline Zero, Polaris Lance, and some sort of Light-based superweapon that deactivated the Vex portal on Europa.

Polaris Lance is technically the creation of Ana Bray, although Elisabeth was the one to provide her the frame of the gun. Worldline Zero was a weapon based on a Vex Core that was used to simulate multiple realities for the Ishtar Collective. The weapon allowed Elisabeth to see into the future. Scared of how that could be manipulated by someone far more devious, she deleted every record that referenced the Sword’s existence.

As for the Light superweapon, it is unknown what this was exactly. According to the “Clovis Bray’s Logbook — Missing Pages” lore entry, Elisabeth created a weapon using a Mote of Light in hopes of crashing every Vex system in 2082 Volantis, a star system that is believed to be the birthplace of the Vex. A weapon such as this is widely believed to be some sort of Light-infused bomb and not a proper gun. Regardless, what has happened to this supposed superweapon is currently unknown since she never got a chance to use it; Clovis Bray I killed Elisabeth before she had a chance to use it.

3 Clovis Killed Her

While the Exo Stranger might not be a bearer of the Light, she has witnessed death a few times throughout her life. It should be obvious that her original self died and became an Exo, but did you know that she has also died as an Exo?

The “Clovis Bray’s Logbook — Missing Pages” lore entry mentions Elisabeth’s fascination with destroying the Vex by using the portal on Europa. Clovis Bray I caught wind of his granddaughter’s plans and acted on them. As she was descending to Europa, Clovis ordered the Hannu II ship to blow her out of the sky. Her mind was then uploaded into a duplicate Exo body. She is still technically Elisabeth-1 due to never being rebooted.

2 Fish Ghost

Various promotional material for Beyond Light shows the Exo Stranger beside some sort of floating entity many in the community have called a “Fish Ghost.” Its existence was practically retconned in the retail build, only seen in a pre-rendered cinematic near the start of the campaign. Dialogue files suggest that the player’s Ghost was going to comment on it, although this dialogue never plays in-game. Perhaps it’s the device that helps her remember past timelines?

1 Led A War Against The Vex

Few characters in the Destiny universe hate the Vex as much as Elisabeth does. Clovis Bray I’s focus on creating a Vex portal on Europa per the Darkness’ request caused many Deep Stone Crypt employees to become corrupted by the Vex. Elisabeth witnessed this first hand when she had to rescue her grandfather from a copy of Maya Sundaresh.

Experiencing the horrifying Exo dreams herself, Elisabeth was sure that the Vex were also subverting Exos. She then vowed to destroy them by using a superweapon at 2082 Volantis. While that failed, BrayTech’s incursions on the star system made the Vex irritable, causing them to invade Europa en masse. With the help of Clovis-1, she led a war against the Vex and ultimately won. The portal on Europa lied dormant until Eramis reactivated it during the Beyond Light campaign.
