With the Destiny Content Vault quickly approaching, many Guardians are attempting to brave Destiny 2’s toughest challenges before they are vaulted when Beyond Light launches. One of the most rewarding raids in the game is Scourge of the Past, a raid in the Last City that houses one of the best Exotics and the best Sparrow in the game.

However, many players have taken to skipping this raid due to the unique map mechanic. This map displays tons of information to players and it needs to be relayed to your fireteam. For those looking to master the map reading role for the Scourge of the Past raid, here are eight tips you’ll need to succeed.

8 Map Reading Basics

Map readers will be given a ton of information when they first start the encounter. Fortunately, most of the icons are easy to understand.

Green denotes a deposit or “dunk” station for the Radiant Batteries Berserkers drop. Yellow circles are fireteam members. Red triangles are enemy Berserkers roaming the map. Those with red circles above their head denote a Berserker that is holding two Radiant Batteries. Send fireteam members to the Berserker holding two Radiant Batteries to make sure the encounter goes smoothly.

When fireteam members obtain a Radiant Battery, they will have several dots that appear above their heads. Direct them to the station that corresponds with their number. For example, if someone grabs a battery and gets “three,” they must deposit at the third station or they will cause a fireteam wipe.

7 Berserker Differences

Berserkers will spawn throughout the first and final encounter of the Scourge of the Past raid. Most Berserkers will drop one Radiant Battery when killed, although certain marked Berserkers will drop two.

These unique Berserkers can be spotted by looking for a red arrow that has a red circle above it on the encounter map. Slaying these enemies will drop two batteries, one of which will always lead to the map in the first encounter.

6 Check The Fallen Clock

Both the first and final encounters of Scourge of the Past have wipe mechanics that are based on timers. While the final encounter conveys time remaining through text prompts, the first encounter uses an actual clock.

After depositing the first Radiant Battery into the map device, look to the left of the station to find a Fallen pillar with a clock attached to it. It will slowly count down the amount of time your fireteam has until the encounter is automatically failed. Should it reach the red portion, a warning text prompt will appear. Dunk Radiant Batteries into the map device to extend the time in the first encounter. As for extending time in the final encounter, interrupt Insurrection Prime’s charged weapon by destroying the large orange canister attached to the weapon.

5 Deposit Locations Are Clockwise

Every deposit station in the raid is positioned clockwise from each other to make callouts easier amongst a fireteam. Taking the first encounter’s map as an example, one is at the Schnell building at the top of the map. Two can be found at the three-o-clock position on the right side of the map. Following suit, three is located at the bottom of the map, and four is found on the left section. The same clockwise rotation occurs in the final encounter, with one being north, two is at the bottom-right of the arena, and three is at the bottom-left of the map. This makes giving callouts as a map reader much easier.

4 North Is Always One

On a related note, the first “dunk” station in the first and final encounter always faces north. For the first encounter, the first station is the Schnell building that overlooks the region. The second encounter’s north-most deposit station is the tank plate closest to the Traveler. Those that read the map and give directions can give out positional callouts such as “right” or “bottom-left” instead of numbers if the fireteam finds it easier.

3 Servitors Disable The Map

Servitors disrupt virtually everything tied to Scourge of the Past. They make the Sparrow encounter a time-trial, prevent half of the team from leaving the underground during the third encounter, and they are also responsible for disabling the map device. Map readers should have powerful weapons such as Izanagi’s Burden or a strong Heavy weapon to take these enemies down quickly. Otherwise, they will disable the map and prevent you from giving directions.

If the map reader has a hard time defending the zone, consider allocating a second player as a map defender after they deposit a Radiant Battery in the map device.

2 Deposit Stations Relate To The Underground Maze

Directly after the first encounter lies the sprawling underground maze that stumps certain Guardians. Luckily, those that are used to reading the map might know how to traverse this maze best.

The underground maze is a sewer system that connects the four deposit stations of the first encounter. Map readers can infer where the maze exit is solely off of where the fireteam entered from.

1 Summon A Hidden Tank

While not directly linked with the map itself, the first encounter of Scourge of the Past has a hidden tank that can be summoned to make the encounter easier. Using the map as a guide will make this secret much easier to reveal, however.

Look at the horizontal road adjacent to the “three” deposit station on the map. Look for a holographic building with a ton of balconies on it. It can be found on the corner of the third vertical street of the complex. Head on a Sparrow and drive down to the location, keeping your eyes peeled for a grey building with a ton of balconies as you go. Climb up the backside of the building—facing south—to find two buttons. Have a partner melee one at the same time you do to spawn a Drake at the top-left of the map. Hop in and tear the Fallen apart!
