Destiny is best known for its superb gunplay and RNG loot, but the franchise has accomplished so much more than that. Not only did it bring the social elements of an MMO into a looter shooter, but it also brought the intense raiding experience from MMOs into a shooter.
Raids and shooters shouldn’t work together, but Destiny’s raids are some of the most fun you can have in any shooter. Destiny 2 has 7 Raids to choose between, which can make choosing your first raid all the more difficult. Most veterans will recommend Scourge of the Past thanks to its easy-to-understand mechanics and action-packed encounters. Whether it’s your first or hundredth time playing Scourge, here are 10 tips to make this raid much less daunting.
10 Bring a 160 Sparrow
Scourge of the Past is the only raid in Destiny 2 that allows you to ride your Sparrow. Its encounters are designed around you using them.
As a result, bringing the fastest Sparrow possible is a good idea. Sparrows have a maximum speed value of 160, so bring one of these Sparrows with you to make each encounter go by a little bit quicker. Preferably, you want to bring a Sparrow that won’t easily get stuck on geometry for the second encounter.
9 Berserkers Always Drop A Map Battery
Berserkers are a new enemy introduced in the Scourge of the Past raid. These enemies must have their energy packs destroyed on their front and back when enraged.
This drops Batteries for your team to deposit. As long as you killed the right one, it should drop two. For the first encounter, one of these Batteries will always lead to the map. If the first person who grabs a Battery has to go elsewhere, the second player should grab their Battery and head straight to the map as it can’t be any other location. This tip helps save time to complete the Hold the Line Challenge.
8 Sniper Rifles Are A Must
Each encounter in this raid takes place in a large location with long sightlines, resulting in Vandals being more of a threat than ever.
To even the odds, bringing a Sniper Rifle is a great idea. Many will use Whisper of the Worm to defeat Insurrection Prime, but The Supremecy or virtually any Special Sniper will get the job done. These weapons are great for taking out Vandals or Insurrection’s shields from a distance.
7 Hammer Strike Insurrection
Insurrection Prime has two encounters. The first encounter is about destroying the construct holding the mech into the ground.
This construct can only be damaged by tanks, but it isn’t infallible to certain debuffs. As your team rises from the depths to obtain their tanks to damage the construct, have a spare Titan stationed up top to Hammer Strike/Melting Point the boss. This will massively boost the damage the team deals to the boss, allowing you to destroy it in one phase instead of two.
6 Coordinate Your Tank’s Rocket Attacks
In the same vein, the fireteam that is firing the cannons and rockets from the tanks themselves should coordinate their attacks.
Tanks can fire lock-on rockets that deal reasonable damage to Insurrection’s construct, but these rockets deal much more damage when multiple land simultaneously. Coordinate with your team and fire your rockets at the same time to get an added damage bonus that allows you to easily one-phase this encounter.
5 Don’t Move Forward On Your Sparrow
FPS games are almost always about moving forward while shooting. This behavior transitions to most vehicles in these games as well, but you shouldn’t do this on your Sparrow in Destiny.
Sparrows that are boosting will move at maximum velocity on their own. Holding down W or up on your joystick limits the side maneuverability your Sparrow has, making the second encounter harder than it needs to be. Double-tap your inputs instead to dash to the side to reposition your Sparrow without losing too much momentum.
4 How To Navigate The Maze
After the first encounter is completed, players will need to navigate an underground maze. This maze can get rather confusing to navigate, but it is easier than most think.
Your objective is to reach the middle of the maze, but there’s only one side you can enter from. The exit is a crack in the wall on the right side of the maze. You can easily tell if there is a Black Armory box opened next to the rubble leaning against the hole. Don’t go too far the tunnels or you’ll miss it entirely. Once you found the path, turn on the lights near you to guide your team.
3 Battery Deposit Stations Are Positioned Clockwise
Many players struggle to remember where the various Battery deposit stations are located on each encounter. Thankfully, they all follow a pattern.
The stations are positioned clockwise with the first station facing north. In the first encounter, the Schnell building is north so it’s number 1. To the east of that is number 2, south of Schnell is 3, and the west is 4. The same applies to the final boss arena where the northern tank pad is 1, the bottom-right pad is 2, and the bottom-left pad is 3.
2 Keep Roles Consistent Across Encounters
Team members should all be given a role to fulfill while playing any raid, Scourge being no exception.
This raid will require a map reader for the first and final encounter, and the raid highly encourages pairs to take on Berserkers and deposit their dropped charges. Keep these roles consistent to help your team succeed, even if your team keeps failing the encounter. Swapping map readers or pairs can seriously mess up the combat and communication rhythm your team has developed up to that point.
1 Remember To CAP The Final Boss
Any veteran raider who has completed the Scourge of the Past raid will likely know about CAP. This strategy makes the final boss fight much less hectic and dramatically increases your team’s damage output.
During the damage phase, Insurrection will periodically grant a buff to the fireteam. It can be one of three things: Continous, Angular, or Parallel. Now, players with Angular should position themselves right in front of the boss. Continuous players should be behind the Angular players and slightly to the left. Parallel players stay back while standing slightly to the right. This will form a triangle when done properly with each vertex representing a buff, which is where the name CAP comes from. Pop a Well of Radiance or Ward of Dawn at each of these vertices to better coordinate positioning while also granting a powerful damage buff. If done properly, players with the same buffs will stand near each other and gain the Phase Synergy buff, dramatically increasing the damage you deal to Insurrection and allowing your team to one-phase the boss.
