Alright, alright, alright! Newly introduced in Destiny 2: Forsaken, The Drifter is a rogue light-bearer and handle of the hybrid PvEvP game mode, Gambit. Not quite a hero and not quite a villain, Drifter surrounds himself and the things he’s connected to with mystery, creating his own unique place in Destiny 2’s lore and among it’s unique and memorable cast.
Despite his unique place, though, he’s by no means exempt from being turned into a meme like everyone else, and here are ten perfect examples of just how meme-able he can be.
10 Sweaty Clanned Up 4-Stack
The grind to prestige in Gambit isn’t an easy one, with sixteen total ranks to climb through. Unfortunately, as with most activities, the end is where things ramp up a little in difficulty. At Legend rank, only wins earn the necessary infamy points to increase your rank.
This is particularly nightmarish for solo players, and nothing can make a player’s heart sink more than loading into a match and seeing four clanmates on the opposing team. Sure, Gambit has matchmaking, but Drifter seems to be particularly mean to solo players with it.
9 Ding!
Anyone that has ever played a Gambit match knows that Drifter is a fan of coin tricks. When the enhanced mode, Gambit Prime, was released, so too was a new series of introductory Gambit cutscenes.
The one in particular that this one references is one where Drifter flicks his trademark jade coin and causes its face to change. He does this several times, and each time he offers only one word: ding!
8 Wear A Mask
Topical and relevant, Drifter’s likeness from the teaser trailer for the upcoming Destiny 2 Fall expansion, Beyond Light, takes a humorous look at the state of the world today.
In the midst of a global pandemic, it has become a common courtesy to others to wear a mask in public spaces. Looks like Drifter is on top of it as he heads out to meet with some friends on Europa - which makes for great modern-day meme material.
7 Transmat Firing!
This line quickly became meme-worthy because of what usually precedes it. At the start of a Gambit match after revealing what type of enemy players will face, Drifter will take a moment to share a piece of trivia or a story before sending players to the battlefield.
The thing is, often what Drifter reveals is just enough to raise an eyebrow at. Whether it’s something about eating a Hive knight, partying with Cabal, or pawning his Gjallarhorn, players barely have time to register his quip and even less time to question it before it’s go time.
6 Mine, Not Yours
As Gambit suggests, The Drifter has dabbled in some questionable things and spent time with some questionable groups. One such group was the Shadows of Yor, the fanatical followers of the infamous Dredgen Yor. His time with them left Drifter particularly nervous about being hunted down by Shin Malphur, the equally infamous Man With The Golden Gun.
It makes sense, then, that The Drifter is mildly put off by the fact that players show up with Malphur’s iconic hand cannon, The Last Word. This meme reflects that ire perfectly, albeit with a little less drama and a little more comedy.
5 A Drifter Meme About Drifter Memes
Gambit’s more intense, single round, armor bonus granting evolved form, Gambit Prime, saw the welcome addition of new opening cutscenes prior to a match. Unsurprisingly, Destiny fans were quick to jump on the opportunity to make a new meme format.
As impressive as Drifter’s coin tricks are, he should have known he was ultimately going to get meme-ed for it. Guess it goes to show that guardians are ruthless both in-game and online.
4 Snitch
Regardless of how players feel about how Drifter spends his time, it’s undeniable that he does a fantastic job of hyping up players. Be it in the Gambit arena, or just in the tower annex while picking up some bounties, Drifter will make sure players feel welcome.
That is, of course, if players opted to side with the Drifter in Season of the Joker’s Allegiance quest. During this unique quest, if players instead chose to side with the Vanguard they can forget about hearing “brother” or “sister.” “Snitch” becomes the new title, instead.
3 Behind You
This meme, derived from the coolest cutscene in Destiny 2, makes a point that players may find all too real.
At this point, memes are an undeniable part of modern culture, and if any piece of content has any kind of fanbase, there will be memes. Gaming fans are no exception, and, like Drifter, the most enthusiastic fans have no shame sharing the best Destiny memes well into the wee hours of the morning.
2 Cheese For All
Outside of the Destiny universe of meme templates, this template from the movie Despicable Me is incredibly popular. With an extra little twist, it both fits The Drifter and sums up the early days of the Season of Arrivals.
This meme alludes to the infamous forge farming cheese that allowed players to AFK farm this season’s new umbral engrams. In a few hours, players could have their postmaster storage filled to the brim with the things, and since they had to be decoded via Drifter’s umbral decoder, he probably didn’t mind that those rewards we cheesed. After all, he’s still cashing in.
1 Alright, Alright, Alright
This meme takes Drifter’s most iconic phrase and mashes it up with an iconic song. The result? A perfect meme.
Channeling his inner André 3000, Drifter takes his most well-recognized opener and fuses it with fan-favorite OutKast song “Hey Ya,” and players that remember the early 2000s will probably have the song stuck in their heads after seeing this. At the very least, it’s fitting that this goes best with the Drifter. He’s one cool NPC, after all, and when it comes down to it, what’s really cooler than being cool?
