A few days back, VentureBeat writer Jeff Grubb had speculated that Microsoft and CD Projekt Red would be putting Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Game Pass at launch. His idea was that with the subscription service being so enticing, putting major releases on there instead of doing timed-exclusivity would be far more lucrative for publishers than losing profit from other platforms. Whatever the reasoning, CD Projekt Red has completely refuted the idea.

Responding to Grubb a few days later, Radek Grabowski (PR manager for CD Projekt Red) said, “You have to pick another example, Jeff. No Game Pass plans for Cyberpunk 2077.” It should be noted that Microsoft, itself, also shot down rumors a few months back after the Xbox Portugal Twitter account inaccurately claimed Cyberpunk would be on the service.

This bit of news may be disappointing, but it makes complete sense. Cyberpunk 2077 might be the most anticipated game of the year and getting it on Game Pass, possibly on both Xbox One and PC, would significantly hurt sales. Even if the game was only available for a few months, that’s still a ton of lost profit.

We can’t completely rule out the possibility of Cyberpunk hitting Game Pass in a year or two, but you will not be playing it for $1 in 2020.
