Demon Turf is an upcoming 3D platformer that looks to reignite the genre with a sassy and intriguing storyline.

Fabraz, the developers of the award winning 2D platformer Slime-san are looking to test their skills and take the concept to a 3D world with Demon Turf.

According to Nintendo Everything, the story revolves around the young Beebz, a young demon living in the Demon World. In the Demon World demons and other baddies are divided into gangs centralized around a powerful leader, but everyone bows to the Demon King who rules over everyone. Interested in dethroning the Demon King and becoming the Demon Queen, Beebz sets out to take down the gang leaders before facing the Demon King herself.

In addition to being a 3D platformer the game will feature an interesting combat system where players can push, pull, and spin enemies. The game’s trailer also reveals Beebz obtaining a variety of powers to further her quest for dominion. It’s likely theses powers are obtained after defeating the mini bosses.

The game also hosts some interesting features that might make those leery of 3D platformers give this one a try. Players can decide where to place their checkpoints allowing them to establish them just before a particularly difficult part of the level. This is typically a major complaint of platformers as they force players to replay large sections of the level or even the entire level over again should the character die. This mechanic negates this and significantly cuts down on the frustration of dying.

The Demon World will also morph and change over time as the player liberates each area. Once the mini boss is defeated the player can revisit the area to find that on a “mechanical and environmental” level it’ll be different. In addition to completing the main quest players can tackle a variety of side quests and challenges, some of which may be related to the changes made by the player.

At this time, the game doesn’t have an official release date, with the developer stating that it’ll come out in either 2020 or 2021. Considering they already have a trailer and some gameplay footage, it seems they at least have the bare bones of the game up and running - or perhaps some of the initial levels nearly finished.

Players will have to wait and see what Demon Turf brings to the table, and if it will ll truly revitalize the 3D platforming genre and dethrone the current popularity of indie 2D platformers.
