At Sony’s PlayStation 5 price and release date reveal event, developer Bluepoint Games revealed its first look at gameplay from the upcoming Demon’s Souls remake. The initial look at the game promised that the remake would feature visually stunning recreations of iconic locations from the classic game, but the gameplay highlighted how Bluepoint has evolved the formula for modern consoles.

Most of what was on display during the Demon’s Souls remake trailer was quick glances at the player character traveling through various locations and fighting a few basic enemies. However, a final montage gave fans a good look at some of their favorite bosses and encounters from Demon’s Souls, like the Maneaters and the massive Tower Knight.

All told, the visuals in the Demon’s Souls remake look very impressive and should please fans of the original game, as well as welcome in those that have come to love the Souls series through later entries like Dark Souls or spin-offs like Bloodborne. That being said, there may be some gameplay elements that could concern fans, specifically with the way the player character moves.

Obviously, Bluepoint needs to update the game’s mechanics, but some might be surprised to see how fast Demon’s Souls looks. For a PS3 game, Demon’s Souls was somewhat clunky in its controls but the remake looks very fluid. This is likely a good thing overall, but it will be interesting to see fan response to the gameplay.

There are also plenty of questions left unanswered by the trailer, including how customization will work in the game. Although the Demon’s Souls remake trailer focuses on the iconic design of the player character from the game’s original box art, there are also other armor pieces that players can wear and weapons that they can wield. Presumably, Bluepoint Games has preserved that element for the remake, but fans will have to wait and see on that front.

As well, the trailer does not reveal that Demon’s Souls is a launch title for the PlayStation 5, but a follow-up message from Geoff Keighley claims that it will be. However, launch title can mean a lot of different things depending on the context. Most assume that means that Demon’s Souls will be available alongside the PS5 release date on November 12 but that may not be the case. Oftentimes a launch title is classified as a game that releases within a console’s “launch window,” which can last up to 6 months after the console launch. Still, the prospect of seeing the game in action today and knowing that it will be playable sooner rather than later is sure to be exciting for fans.
