The Soulsborne franchise consistently does a great job when it comes to side quests. Both Dark Souls and Bloodborne feature a variety of side characters with their own proper storylines who intersect with the player over the course of the game – often offering rewards if you stick around to follow their entire questline. Recently remade for the PlayStation 5, Demon’s Souls offers audiences a chance to experience FromSoftware’s best titles in a fresh coat of paint.
Even though Demon’s Souls kick started the Soulsborne series, it’s arguably the best entry in the lot thanks to impeccable level design and inspired boss fights that offer unique gameplay challenges. While most Souls games feature a central hub, Demon’s Souls’ Nexus is the most populated and busy of the lot, ultimately featuring several side quest and NPCs.
Yurt the Silent Chief is one of Demon’s Souls’ most mysterious NPCs and a ticking time bomb who can single handedly ruin the Nexus for players. Just meeting Yurt invites danger into your game, but he drops one of the best armor sets in Demon’s Souls and is a key part of understanding the world’s lore.
Into The Tower Of Latria
Yurt the Silent Chief can be found in the Archstone of the Tower Queen, bringing players into the Tower of Latria (otherwise considered Demon’s Souls’ third major world). The Tower of Latria is smack dab in the middle difficulty-wise and features claustrophobic level design that’s bound to punish unattentive players with bottomless pits and lethal enemies.
Yurt can only be found in 3-2 (the Fool’s Idol Archstone), so players will need to complete 3-1 fully before hunting down the Silent Chief. Along with sporting tight spaces, the Tower of Latria is a several stories tall prison with locked doors you’ll need to hunt down keys for and prisoners who can be spirited back to the Nexus.
The Prison of Hope’s keys aren’t too difficult to find as they’re usually just sitting out in the open, but 3-1 becomes considerably more complicated once players reach the bottom floor. Anyone who beelines right to the boss gate will have to fight a Fool’s Idol who cannot die. A prisoner on a balcony up above is keeping the Fool’s Idol alive, so players need to find and kill them before entering the arena. After that, the Fool’s Idol can be killed rather easily.
Rescuing Yurt
With the Fool’s Idol dead, players will be immediately whisked away to 3-2 without an opportunity to return to the Nexus. From the Upper Latria Archstone, keep straight on the walkway up ahead and kill any Gargoyles in your path until you reach the central build. Hook left and run up the stairs to find another walkway connected to a western tower.
Keep the Gargoyles at bay and run up the stairs inside of the tower to find an elevator. Take it up and follow the stairs until you reach a giant altar. Take the adjacent set of stairs down and carefully roll onto the platform down below. Yurt will be locked in a cage on the platform up ahead, waiting to be released.
For anyone looking to equip Yurt’s Gloom Set, now’s the best time to kill the Silent Chief. Quickly backstab him and keep on the offensive until he dies. If Yurt ends up falling off the platform, simply reload the game and his drops will be right by his cage. If left alive, Yurt will return to the Nexus and start dropping bodies.
Yurt’s Questline
If Yurt is alive, he’ll kill one NPC every time the player defeats a boss. The first time players defeat a boss after saving Yurt serves as a warning – two unnamed bodies will be in the Nexus. From there, prominent NPCs die in the following order:
- Freke’s Apprentice Acolyte of God Patches, the Hyena Saint Urbain Saint Freke Yuria, the Witch
After all six NPCs have been killed, speak to Yurt and he’ll immediately aggro the player. Killing Yurt will allow you to pick up the Gloom Set in the Nexus, but keep in mind that none of these NPCs can be revived. For anyone running a magic build, it’s best to stop Yurt before he goes on his killing spree.
