The protagonist of Demon’s Souls is the primary catalyst for everything that happens in the game. Known only as the Slayer of Demons they are responsible for either the salvation of Boletaria or its utter destruction.

For someone of great importance and power there is a lot about this character that doesn’t make much sense. Whether it’s their role in the story, their relationship with demons, or their ultimate fate there is a lot that doesn’t stack up.

10 Went Looking For Demon Souls

After Vallarfax returned from the fog and warned everyone of what was going on in Boletaria the protagonist ventures inside the fog. Yet it’s never made clear exactly why they make this trip and what’s driving them.

It’s clear they seek out Demon Souls but what’s never made clear is why. Are they seeking power? Saving the world? It’s never made clear until the very end of the game when the player makes the choice. Did the character know prior to this point or were they operating on autopilot until they made a decision?

9 Saved By The Maiden In Black

Considering the motivations of the protagonist is unclear it doesn’t make sense why the Maiden In Black would have saved them. Surely this powerful demon capable of immense power would have been able to discern the motivations of the protagonist.

But even if the protagonist was there for the right reason, why choose them? They lack any remarkable skill or ability that sets them apart from other warriors. So why is it that they were chosen? Or is anyone who ventures into the fog chosen and there is nothing special about the protagonist?

8 They Stay Sane

During the course of the game the player will face incredible horrors. From the undead to fearsome demonic dragons the land is a festering pool of nightmare fuel that the protagonist is steadily wading through.

Yet at no point does any of this chaos have an affect on the character’s sanity. Anyone else in that situation would have been disturbed by the presence of a single zombie or powerful demon. But it has seemingly no impact on the character who has never encountered any of these horrors before.

7 Never Speaks

Despite being able to grunt and scream during battle the protagonist is apparently incapable of speech. They never utter a single word and never verbally communicate with anyone. For the entirety of the story they are the strong silent type.

It’s unclear exactly why that is, especially if the character is from an occupation that would have required speech like Royalty or Magician. For whatever reason the character is almost entirely mute and never attempts to speak to anyone.

6 People Understand The Protagonist

Considering the protagonist never speaks at any point in the game its unclear exactly how they communicate with anyone else. Even more absurd is that everyone they interact with seems to understand them perfectly.

The merchants know what they want, Stockpile Thomas knows what to hang onto or turn over, and the blacksmiths know exactly what they want fixed. Either the protagonist is incredibly gifted at body language or they communicate telepathically which is an amazing feat for the average human.

5 Trusts The Maiden In Black

While the protagonists motivations are unclear it is apparent that they are seeking out the souls of demons. There entire purpose for being there is to slay demons and absorb their souls.

Yet after encountering the Maiden In Black, a self-professed demon of great power, the character has no interest in slaying them. Before she even opens her lips the Slayer of Demons should have attempted to take her soul, but it doesn’t happen. Instead they trust the demon with their lives.

4 Passed Through The Fog

From all indications in the lore the colorless fog itself is a seemingly impenetrable and dangerous thing. Many who have ventured into the fog never return and only one individual has ever escaped from it.

Yet without any prior knowledge of what the fog is or how it works the protagonist passes safely through. Granted the Maiden In Black helped them escape, but there’s no telling how they survived up to that point in the first place.

3 Never Tires

It doesn’t matter how far they run or how many battles they enter into the protagonist never tires. Sure they become fatigued and need to regenerate their stamina, but after a brutal engagement with a mighty demon, they’re ready to run off and fight the next one.

Assuming the average time to beat the game, which is about 20 hours, translates to real-time in the game that’s an insane athletic accomplishment. For 20 hours the protagonist is wielding various weapons, casting magic, running, dodging, and dying over and over again without ever needing a nap.

2 Is A Blank Slate

The protagonist, savior, or destroyer of the world is seemingly a blank slate. Stepping into the fog they apparently have no backstory or background to explain who they are and where they came from.

Sure they might have been a Hunter, but where did they hunt? What manner of beasts and animals did they slay? Say they’re Royalty, over which lands did they rule and why are they venturing alone into the fog and not accompanied by bodyguards or even a contingent of soldiers? It’s almost as if the protagonist was born out of the fog itself and possesses only a general sense of who they are that may or may not be true.

1 Didn’t Turn Into a Blob

After slaying hundreds of enemies, absorbing a tremendous number of souls both human and demon alike the protagonist possesses incredible power. In fact, they possess more power than King Allant who also was granted immense power through souls both human and demonic.

But what’s strange is that King Allant turned into a blob and the protagonist remained in human form. Is the protagonist in better control of their corporeal form? Did they consume more human souls than King Allant did? There’s no indication why the two are so different from each other after gorging themselves on demon’s souls. Yet one stands on two feet and the other undulates across the ground.
