It’s been over six years since Dead Island 2 was first announced. Revealed during E3 2014, the title has been on-again, off-again with so many developers that no one really knows what is happening. Publisher Koch Media’s last messaging about the game was that the project wasn’t dead, but that was back in November of 2019. What gives?
If a recent job listing is anything to go by, it could be indicating that Dead Island 2 is headed to next-generation platforms. Dambuster Studios (the company that inherited the project from Sumo Digital…who inherited it from Yager…) posted a listing for an “Art Director” that makes specific mention of Dead Island in its description.
The key wording here is “current and future platforms.” Dead Island 2 may still be headed for PS4 and Xbox One, but it’s more likely that development has shifted to PS5 and Xbox Series X. With no updates about what is going on, we’re only left with speculation here.
For what it’s worth, I feel Dambuster should consider rebooting the franchise and simply titling this next game Dead Island. I find it hard to believe any fans of the original are still waiting for this sequel, especially since it is so far removed from original developer Techland.
