Castlevania-inspired action-platformer, Dead Cells, will be making its debut on consoles sometime in 2018. According to Motion Twin, the indie game studio who developed and published the game, that reality may come sooner than later.
In a response to a tweet asking when the console release date is, Motion Twin responded simply with, “Soon my precious… Soon.”
While the announcement of Dead Cells coming to consoles originally came at the end of January, this update is sure to increase the excitement for fans of the game who may have held off purchasing the currently PC-only game until it comes out of Steam Early Access.
In another tweet, Motion Twin hinted at the possibility of actually playing Dead Cells on a console system at their PAX East booth facilitated by Indie MEGABOOTH, which will take place April 5th through the 8th. Regardless of which consoles the game is presented on at PAX East, bringing the 2D side-scrolling title to consoles makes sense from both a business and playability perspective.
Dead Cells continues to thrive on Steam, maintaining its “Overwhelmingly Positive” user review status, while increasing its already strong player base. The game is ideal for use with a controller, so porting it to any and all consoles is a logical decision. Keeping in mind that the game maintains elements of rogue-lite dynamics as well as permadeath, bringing Dead Cells to consoles makes even more sense for the Nintendo Switch, specifically, as its gameplay lends itself nicely to quick sessions on-the-go utilizing the mobile console.
As with all generalities, “soon” could just be the figurative carrot-on-a-stick, dangling in front of us just out of reach; teasing us as we await an official release date. However, the fact that Motion Twin will be showing off a playable console-version of Dead Cells at PAX East provides an indication that bringing the game to consoles may actually be further along than originally thought; potentially coming out before summer 2018, as originally reported. At any rate, the critically-acclaimed game is already impressive in Early Access. We’ll be more than happy to wait for the console versions, if it means an equally or more impressive gameplay experience.
