After months of teasing, asymmetrical multiplayer horror title Dead by Daylight has finally gotten cross-play multiplayer on all platforms. Previously available on PC between the Windows Store and Steam ports, developer Behaviour Interactive has added in support for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch players. Now, players won’t have any excuse for not jumping into a game with their friends.
In an update over on Dead by Daylight’s blog, the devs address a few common questions that crop up every time cross-play is introduced in other titles. Currently, the console ports will not have access to mouse and keyboard controls, which could mean PC players get an advantage. If you want to opt-out of that, an option will be available to disable cross-play entirely. DLC might not be a match between each port, but the game will default to a standard character model should you not have access to said content.
To help accommodate players across different platforms, a new “Cross-Friends” system has been implemented for matchmaking. By searching for your friend’s unique DBD ID, you’ll be able to quickly join their matches regardless of platform restrictions. This will also facilitate cross-play parties, which should help cut down on the wait during matchmaking.
The only lacking feature is an option for chatting across platforms. Most players will probably be using Discord or some alternative, but Behaviour is looking into getting an in-game chat system implemented regardless. Getting the feature up and running was more important than worrying about chat.
Your final question may relate to content updates/patches on a specific platform and Behaviour already has a fix in place. For any platforms that get delayed in the patch certification process, cross-play will be temporarily disabled until Dead by Daylight can be properly updated. This will prevent any exploits from leaking their way over to platforms that have already patched them out.
For a title such as Dead by Daylight, cross-play will be a huge boon. Players don’t really have issues getting into matches, but opening the pool to literally everyone is smart. There’s no reason why a game built around the idea of multiplayer should be limited by the console it resides on.
