The latest edition to the Batman: Black & White series is a statue based on the artwork by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and it’s a real head-turner. The statue was announced by DC Direct in honor of the Black and White series’ 100th addition that has joined the collection that’s been running for 15 years.
This limited edition piece has only 5000 up for grabs and measures approximately 9.75" tall. The exquisite collectors item is based off of McFarlane’s cover design for 1988’s Batman #423 and is sculpted by Jonathan Matthews. The only altercation of McFarlane’s design was the removal of the rescued woman in Batman’s arms in order for his iconic bat symbol to be visible on the chest. This piece is notably larger than past editions to the Black & White series that were usually around the 1:12 scale.
The collection’s motive for the line was to create these impressive sculptures that retained the look and feel of the original drawings whilst being presented to fans in a fantastic 3D format. Batman’s cape on the sculpt is a perfect example of McFarlane’s gothic style as an artist that is noticeably the focal point of the statue. The signature grayscale theme compliments the particular highlights featured in the sculpt and could easily be the center piece for collectors of the whole series.
The Canadian artist and writer Todd McFarlane is best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man comics and is the creator of the anti-hero Spawn. He was the first artist to draw the first appearances of Venom and has since become a business owner over McFarlane Toys and the film and animation studio Todd McFarlane Entertainment. The artist has worked with DC Comics from early on his career and illustrated the last three issues of Batman: Year Two in 1987.
Over the 15 years that the collection has been running, the Batman: Black & White series was primarily based on the limited comic book series Batman Black and White, however the line has since evolved to feature artwork from other titles. The DC Collectibles line has featured other heroes and villains such as the Joker, Nightwing, Robin and Batgirl, however the series has done an incredible job in capturing each version of the Bat from various mediums of the franchise.
Batman: Black & White by Todd McFarlane is selling at $135 from July and can be found through the DC Direct website.
