Given the grittiness of the Darkest Dungeon, the eldritch horrors players face in the depths, and other features many players have drawn comparisons between this game and the Dark Souls series. This has given rise to a number of Dark Souls-based mods.
These mods change the skins of items and characters, add new features, introduce new factions, and even add iconic enemies from the Dark Souls series. For players looking to add a bit of Dark Souls to their Darkest Dungeon playthrough, here are some excellent mods to consider.
10 Estus Flask
The Estus Flask mod is a simple one designed to replace the food icons with Estus Flask icons. It also changes the names and item descriptions of food to reflect the Estus Flask. Hunger Events have also been converted over to something more thematically appropriate.
It’s a simple change, but one that feels right. After all it makes more sense for a character to heal from severe injuries using an Estus Flask than gorging on cheese found in a dungeon. Granted it does do away with characters worrying about hunger which might break immersion for some, but it’s a small issue.
9 Bonfire Skins
This Bonfire Skins mod pairs well with the Estus Flask mod as it replaces the cooking pot campfire with a bonfire from Dark Souls. Now instead of having a roasting pig or a cook pot hanging over the flames it will be a sword buried in the embers.
Before players get too excited it should be noted that it’s merely an aesthetically-based mod. These bonfires do not offer fast travel to previous areas or any other features. But if players are looking for an immersive mod, this is one to consider.
8 Acolyte Of Sun
The Acolyte of Sun mod introduces a new class that centered around healing and support. It has a skill called Regenerate that can heal the entire party over time. Focused Regeneration can heal a particular ally and transfer their blight to the Acolyte.
The healing and support abilities do come with a catch to keep the class balanced. All restoration abilities will cause the Acolyte to suffer a speed debuff and potentially suffer a unique disease. Still, it looks to be a helpful class on and off the battlefield.
7 The Warrior Of Sunlight
This mod creates a new class called the Warrior of Sunlight who bears an uncanny resemblance to Solaire of Astora. These warriors are geared towards benefitting the party by standing on the frontlines as a tank with stunning ability. He also has some helpful support abilities if he’s booted to the backrow and sunlight spears that can be thrown.
At camp, he can also set up a hearth warming bonfire to heal and assist allies struggling with the horrors of the dungeon. It’s an interesting class that synergizes well with other mods on this list like the Bonfire Skins and The Order of Sunlight.
6 Darkest Soul Variety Project
The Darkest Souls Variety Project mod adds a number of undead foes into the game that bear a strong resemblance to a variety of Dark Souls hollow enemies. Examples of what players will face include a hollow-type enemy wielding a spear, a bersker wielding an axe, and so on.
The main feature is the introduction of a new miniboss called the Invader. It’s based on the Warrior Sunlight mod and features a blood drenched Solaire of Astora that can drop trinkets from that mod. In fact, this mod synergizes with that mod on a lot of levels.
5 Abysswalker
Abysswalker is a mod that adds strong knights to the game based on the Wolf Knight Artorias from Dark Souls. These warriors do best when their stress levels sit between 100 and 200. This is because they receive a buff to damage during affliction and gain a 10% boost to stats when in total darkness.
This class is designed to hover on the frontlines striking, leaping, and thursting. They also possess an interesting Wolf Blood ability which can dump their stress onto someone else providing them with boosted strength and accuracy. The Abysswalker fights in either the Knight or Wolf stance providing further tactical advantages depending on the scenario.
4 Lord’s Blade
This mod adds the Lord’s Blade class based on Lord’s Blade Ciaran from the Dark Souls series. This character is an assassin-type class that utilizes bleed and blight to wound and cripple enemies. She can also deal burst damage to get in quick hits.
At camp, she can apply a buff that gives her allies a chance to deal bleed and blight on their own. This class also synergizes with the Abysswalkers mod giving the class buffs and receiving some benefits as well.
3 The Darkwraith
This mod adds the Darkwraith class to the game. These undead knights are capable of great damage and get stronger the darker the area is. In fact, their swords can actually absorb light to achieve this darkness.
Many of their abilities sacrifice their own HP to deal increased damage. This requires the player to dance them in and out of combat to keep them alive and necessitates a decent healer on the team. Interestingly the mod restricts the player to only having one Darkwraith on the team, they also won’t fight alongside the Warrior of Sunlight class.
2 The Order Of Sunlight
The Order of Sunlight is a mod that introduces a new faction for players to join. The faction has three rankings with the ultimate ranking, Sunlight’s Chosen, providing perks like better stress healing for the party.
If the player has a high enough torchlight they can stumble upon a recruiter in the dungeons. After joining the player will encounter various trinkets and relics to aid in their worship of the sun. It does require some luck and grinding to get everyone in the party to join and level up, but it does give players something to strive for.
1 Mimics!
By far the most annoying enemy in the entire Dark Souls franchise makes an appearance in the Mimics! Mod for the Darkest Dungeon. These shapeshifting monstrosities will appear in the game as Heirloom Chests and function as minibosses. Observant players can notice whether a chest is a mimic or not.
The mod is designed to ramp up the difficulty of the game considerably as they are tough creatures to face and appear at inopportune times. Players who manage to defeat these nightmares will be rewarded with valuable trinkets which can often make tackling one worth it.
