Many gamers associate Dark Souls with difficulty. While this series of games is certainly harder than most third-person titles, From Software has done a great job making this series feel fair to the player.
Skill matters much more than gear in these games, although upgraded gear certainly makes a difference. Estus Flasks are a great example of this. While skilled players will rarely use them, newer players will want to upgrade these as soon as possible. To increase the healing they offer or the FP regained from Ashen Flasks, burning Undead Bone Shards is essential. This list will go over what Undead Bone Shards are and where to find all 10 of them in Dark Souls 3.
11 What Are Undead Bone Shards?
Undead Bone Shards are an item that players can burn at the Firelink Shrine Bonfire to increase the effectiveness of their Ashen and Estus Flasks. There are only 10 in the entire game, and these items can only be found in certain areas. Only a maximum of 10 Undead Bone Shards can be burned on your character, regardless of how many you own or NG+ status.
10 Undead Bone Shard 1: Undead Settlement
The first Undead Bone Shard in Dark Souls 3 can be found rather early in the Undead Settlement. After reaching the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, head to the graveyard filled with giant arrows. Reach the separate platform to the right to obtain the first Undead Bone Shard. Watch out for incoming arrows as you do this.
9 Undead Bone Shard 2: Farron Keep
From the Keep Ruins bonfire near the middle of the map, head down the nearby stairs and look for a tower to your right. Inside should be a group of slugs. Kill them and the second Undead Bone Shard will be on the floor.
8 Undead Bone Shard 3: Cathedral Of The Deep
Cathedral of the Deep has one main bonfire at the Cleansing Chapel. From this bonfire, make your way through the graveyard of maggot-ridden hollows. Cross the bridge to reach the outskirts of the cathedral proper and look for a tombstone. It will be overlooking the graveyard you just crossed. On this tombstone lies the third Bone Shard.
7 Undead Bone Shard 4: Catacombs of Carthus
If you’re missing one Undead Bone Shard on your character, this is likely the one that’s missing. Once in the Catacombs of Carthus, make your way down the long stairway that has a Skeleton Ball rolling up and down the pathway.
Once inside, look behind you and kill the skeleton with a fancy hat. The ball will then break when it collides with the wall, granting an Undead Bone Shard.
6 Undead Bone Shard 5: Carthus Sandworm
The fifth Undead Bone Shard is the simplest to get. You simply need to kill the Carthus Sandworm patrolling Smouldering Lake to obtain it.
It might be simple, but it is by no means easy. The Sandworm is weak to fire and thrust damage, so use those damage types when possible. When it erupts from the ground, take a couple of slashes at it then retreat before it enters the ground again. Keep baiting it out and stab it ad nauseam. Bows always work well for killing the Carthus Sandworm.
5 Undead Bone Shard 6: Smouldering Lake
Inside the Demon Ruins, make your way to the Demon Ruins bonfire. Run into the nearby room filled with fireballs and cautiously make your way to the end of the room, killing all enemies as you go. On your left will be the next Bone Shard, but beware of the Fire Slime above the item.
4 Undead Bone Shard 7: Irithyll of the Boreal Valley
Quite a way into the Irithyll of the Boreal Valley is the Church of Yorshka bonfire. Make your way down the steps next to the bonfire and take a right. Fight the monster next to the tombstone and walk behind it to find the seventh Undead Bone Shard.
3 Undead Bone Shard 8: Profaned Capital
This Undead Bone Shard is nigh-impossible to miss. A corpse next to the Profaned Capital bonfire holds the next Shard alongside an emote. Fans of Dark Souls 2 will recognize the corpse to be none other than Laddersmith Gilligan, an NPC responsible for creating shortcuts for the player by setting up ladders. Coincidentally, players make their way to this bonfire via a ladder Gilligan likely placed himself.
2 Undead Bone Shard 9: Lothric Castle
Make your way to the Dragon Barracks bonfire. Climb up the nearby stairs and cross the bridge guarded by a dragon. Before you fully cross the bridge, roll off of the bridge to your left or right. A corpse can be found under the bridge that has one of the ten Shards.
1 Undead Bone Shard 10: Grand Archives
Dark Souls 3’s final Undead Bone Shard is in a rather obvious location. With that said, it can take ages to get to.
Once at the Grand Archives, fight your way through the library and make your way to the exterior. The path on the roof is rather linear. Just make sure to not die to the Gargoyles that patrol up there. Once at the end of the path, head through the broken window into the top section of the Archives and you should see a corpse sitting on a chair reading a book. Interact with it to obtain the final Undead Bone Shard.
