The man, the myth, the legend. Siegward, the jubilant knight of Catarina, is one of Dark Souls 3’s most memorable characters, and in a game full of memorable characters, that’s saying something. The fan favorite Onion Knight is on his own journey, but he’s never one to hesitate going out of his way to help you or yours.

From the Undead Settlement to the Profaned Capital, Siegward has a rather long quest line but every moment of it is worth it. There are, however, a few things about Siegward and his quest line that don’t make much sense. Let’s take a look.

10 His Armor

One of the most notable aspects about Siegward is the distinct appearance of his armor. Siegward dons a rotund suit of armor that greatly resembles an onion, hence his nickname.

The in-game description of Siegward’s armor describes the reason for its shape as being better to deflect blows but even so, it doesn’t make sense to go around wearing it. Wearing a suit of armor that size has to be incredibly cumbersome and outweighs any protection it could offer.

9 His Positivity

If there’s one thing you can count on Siegward doing it’s being a ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak world. No matter what situation he finds himself in, Siegward always has a positive attitude. While it makes for a great character trait, it doesn’t really make sense in the world of Dark Souls 3.

Sure, the people of Catarina are jubilant and optimistic, but Lothric is a depressing place, pervasively so. There’s a cloud of dread that hangs over Lothric that’ll wear down even the strongest souls, but there’s Siegward wandering around as positive as ever. It doesn’t make sense but more power to him.

8 Being A Knight

This is less about Siegward’s skills as a knight and more about his temperament as a person. He has the uncompromising honor of a gallant knight but other than that, he doesn’t seem like the type of person to be a knight, especially compared to the other knight characters in the game.

Almost every character you meet throughout the game is out for themselves, but Siegward isn’t. Not only is he always happy to see you but he’s always happy to help you on your journey. It’s no wonder he’s a fan favorite but his personality doesn’t quite make sense within the bleak world of Dark Souls 3.

7 Always In A Pickle

It seems every time you bump into Siegward he’s got himself caught in a snag. It’s like he’s in a perpetual state of hitting a wall, and only the player can get him over that wall. Siegward has a long quest line so you’ll be helping him out of pickles quite a few times.

It honestly doesn’t make sense how Siegward has come so far despite facing wall after wall. If it wasn’t for the player always helping him out of pickles, how far would Siegward have been able to get?

6 Leaving His Armor

Dark Souls is not a series that spoon feeds the story to you. It’s up to the player to piece together the story and as such, there’s a lot of lore that’s left open to interpretation, like the end of Siegward’s quest line.

After defeating Yhorm and having one final toast, Siegward seems to die, leaving behind his armor. However, it’s also possible to interpret that Siegward is alive and only left his armor behind, but that doesn’t make much sense because that would mean he’s out there somewhere running around nearly naked, as his dialogue from the well implies.

5 Getting Tricked By Patches

Speaking of wells, not only is Siegward always getting into pickles, he’s also too trusting of others for his own good. Case in point, that time Patches kicked him down a well after being tricked into taking his armor off.

Siegward has been an Undead for a long time, he should have known better. He’s had plenty of time to observe how other Undead act so it doesn’t make sense that he was so trusting.

4 Siegbräu

Siegward is a jolly man who enjoys a drink every now and then, and he often likes to share that drink with someone. After Siegward helps you out in a battle, he likes to celebrate with a toast, sharing some of his Siegbräu with the player.

According to its item description, Siegward makes Siegbräu himself, and that’s the part that doesn’t make too much sense. Since the description implies that he brews it himself, it calls into question where he finds the ingredients in the sparse lands of the Undead, as well as how he brews and distills it.

3 Estus Soup

Speaking of strange concoctions, every once and a while, players can come across a cauldron filled with Estus Soup, which will heal you without having to use one of your sips of your Estus Flask. What’s especially strange is that later on in the game, players learn that it’s been Siegward cooking up the soup.

Like with the Siegbräu, this calls into question just where and how Siegward finds his ingredients to make the soup, including the question of what Estus actually is to begin with.

2 Ties To Yhorm The Giant

The whole reason for Siegward’s quest line is a promise he made to Yhorm the Giant, one of the Lords of Cinder. When Siegward confronts him at the end of his quest line, he calls Yhorm an old friend.

Just how exactly does Siegward know Yhorm? They come from very different worlds but it’s heavily implied that Siegward is one of Yhorm’s closest, and only, friends.

1 Connection To Solaire?

Nothing in Dark Souls 3 is done by accident. Every piece of design and world-building is deliberate and open to interpretation.

So, when you trade a Siegräu to the Pickle Pee, Pump-a-Rum Crow in return for Solaire’s Armor of the Sun, you can’t help but try to find a connection, even if it doesn’t entirely make sense.
