Dark Souls games are dark and depressing; Dark Souls 3 is no exception. It’s actually the saddest of the bunch since its theme is actually death and decay– a proper send off to the trilogy. Still, amidst all the melancholic dregs burying the players knee-deep in desolation, certain characters like Siegward of Catarina provide a friendly respite.
He’s the honorable albeit peculiar “onion knight” who manages to get himself in trouble and near-death situations all the time but never loses his optimism. In the rotting heap of Lothric, Siegward is always ready to put a smile on players’ faces and provide some much-needed jolly cooperation. Here are 10 facts about him to make this strange knight more familiar.
10 HIS NAME MEANS VICTORY
Those who can speak or understand German will have figured this out already. Siegward’s name literally means “victorious” or “victory guardian.” That pretty much sums up his personality and goals in the game.
Siegward is a stalwart knight who will stop at nothing to fulfill an honorable quest for a dear friend or some noble pursuit. From time to time, he’ll even lend some helping hands to the players in order to achieve their own victory.
9 PLAYERS CAN MISS HIS ENTIER QUESTLINE
Jolly and loud as he might be, Siegward of Catarina is actually a tough NPC to keep track of in Dark Souls 3. Even the first encounter with him starts in an elevator and can easily be missed if players are not inquisitive enough.
Once they do miss a couple of interactions with him, including the one in the well and in a certain dungeon, then it’s possible to completely miss Siegward’s entire questline. In doing so, he’ll either end up suggestively dead or missing.
8 PLAYERS CAN GIVE THEIR CATARINA ARMOR TO HIM
During the second encounter with Siegward that takes place outside the Cathedral of the Deep, he seems to be stuck in a well. His armor was also stolen by Patches, a naughty recurring NPC from Dark Souls.
In order to help Siegward, players will have to fetch his armor from Patches. Another method would be giving him another set of Catarina armor. He’ll be forever grateful to the players for this and will resume his questline soon after.
7 HE GIVES PLAYERS 3 FRIENDLY GESTURES
Another incentive to find and talk with Siegward is the gesture reward he gives after a successful interaction. Siegward will give players not one, but three gestures, namely “Toast,” “Sleep,” and “Rejoice.”
These are all friendly and can prove to be useful as greetings in multiplayer because the “Wave” and “Welcome” gesture can only get so exciting. It also sums up Siegward’s philosophies and habits in his life.
6 HE HAS AN INTACT FACE UNDERNEATH
One cool Easter egg players can discover about Dark Souls 3 is that Siegward has a face underneath his helmet. If players can find a camera angle and position that allows Siegward’s helmet to clip through their field of view, then they’ll be able to see his face.
Surprisingly enough, Siegward doesn’t seem to be a Hollow. His face is that of a happy middle-aged man with black hair and mustache, no signs of Hollowing or zombification. He also doesn’t seem to be overweight like his armor implies.
5 HE REWARDS PLAYERS WITH TITANITE SLAB
Apart from giving players some fun and festive gestures, Siegward of Catarina is also generous with crafting materials. During one of the encounters with him in the Irithyll dungeons, players will find him imprisoned.
After a lengthy trip to the Profaned Capital area, players can find a key called Old Cell Key. This will free Siegward and once he’s out, he’ll give players a precious Titanite Slab as a form of gratitude, no better way to thank than that.
4 DRINKING SESSIONS WITH HIM CAN HEAL HP
During an earlier encounter with Siegward in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, players will also encounter him in the gloomy and frosty city. He can be located chilling around in the Irithyll kitchens, cooking some Estus soup.
If he’s there and the players talk to him, Siegward will then offer a toast and give the players his signature beer called Siegbrau and heal some missing HP. Additionally, he will grant the spellEmit Force.
3 HE HELPS PLAYERS WITH YHORM THE GIANT
As a final part of his questline, Siegward will help players slay Yhorm the Giant, one of the main bosses of Dark Souls 3 who possesses a key soul. Siegward will join the fight with Yhorm and give players some hit opportunity with the Storm Ruler sword for easier combat.
Moreover, the cutscene that triggers prior to the Yhorm boss fight will have Siegward in it, not just the player character. That is assuming all pre-requisite interactions with Siegward prior to the boss fight are fulfilled.
2 YHORM THE GIANT IS HIS FRIEND
One interesting thing about having Siegward fight Yhorm alongside the players is his dialogue when he dies from the said battle. Siegward will utter the words Forgive me, old friend… I’ve failed, in everything…" This signifies that there might have been a friendship between the two.
Siegward also talked about Yhorm quite fondly before during the interactions before fighting him. His mission was to help Yhorm finally rest as he once promised the giant king back in their glory days.
1 HE HAS THE SAME VOICE ACTOR AS SIEGMEYER FROM DARK SOULS
Those who have played the first Dark Souls game and the third one will easily discern that there is no difference between the voice of Siegward and Siegmeye of Catarina. They both wear the same armor too and even utter the same line.
Of course, they also have the same voice actor, Miles Richardson. This led to community speculation that Siegward is either a descendant of Siegmeyer or his reincarnation. Both of them had tragic storylines and quests anyway, as is the tradition for the most memorable NPCs of Dark Souls games.
