CD Projekt Red’s (CDPR) games are no strangers to easter eggs. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had a lot of fun ones, including a pretty overt Star Wars reference. Now it seems the developer will reference itself in the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, which will apparently have a Witcher 3 reference.
The easter egg’s information comes from GameSpot, where three members of the outlet got the opportunity to play the opening hours of Cyberpunk 2077. Since the game has three different prologue sequences (Nomad, Street Kid, and Corporate), each of the members selected one of the prologue openings. According to Edmond Tran, the GameSpot member who chose the Corporate opening, there is a magazine in the game that is dedicated to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
At the beginning of the Corporate opening, players are given the opportunity to explore their office and interact with a variety of objects like a work computer. Naturally, there is also a desk drawer that can be interacted with, and as stated by Tran, contains a cognitive booster inhaler and the easter egg. Gracing the cover of the magazine, which is dedicated to “retro gaming,” is the latest installment in The Witcher series. Furthermore, Ciri is the one who is on the cover of the magazine, which is a nice little touch that highlights the game within the world of Cyberpunk 2077.
There is a possibility that more The Witcher easter eggs can be found within Cyberpunk 2077. One fans hope for is coming across Ciri herself. As told by the character in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, she was transported to a world where “People there had metal in their heads, waged war from a distance, […] had their own flying ship instead.” All of the descriptions point to Cyberpunk 2077, with the “metal in their heads” being cyborgs, “waged war from a distance” referring to firearms, and “flying ship” most likely being hovercrafts and vehicles.
Although Cyberpunk 2077’s game director Adam Badowski stated that he was against having Ciri show up in the game, the statement was made two years ago, meaning that a lot may have changed over time and the decision to include the character as a cameo may have been made. Still, the only way to really find out is wait until the game is released.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches on November 19, 2020, for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and Google Stadia on November 19th, 2020.
