Months before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red already has big plans to expand the universe beyond just the medium of video games. Cyberpunk Edgerunners, a brand new anime series based on the highly anticipated game, is set to debut on Netflix in 2022.
Edgerunners will take place in Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City, but other than the setting, the show will not be taking direct inspiration from the game. The series will look to tell brand new stories with characters that won’t be found in Cyberpunk 2077’s story, further expanding on a universe that looks to already have plenty of depth.
According to the announcement, the series will run for 10 episodes and will tell the story of a young kid forced to become an “edgerunner” in order to survive the technology and body modification-obsessed world of Night City. While it may not directly tie into the game, we won’t be surprised if each piece of media contains nods towards the other.
Studio Trigger, the Japanese animation studio famous for series such as Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia will be helming the project. CD Projekt Red will be working closely with the studio as well. Akira Yamaoka, famous for his work on Silent Hill, will be composing the score.
This isn’t the first time CD Projekt Red will work to turn one of its video game worlds into an anime either. After the success of Netflix’s The Witcher series, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime movie, is expected to premiere on the streaming service some time this year. That being said, Edgerunners will be its first project inspired by a wholly original property.
Netflix also plans to release animated shows based on Cuphead, Diablo, and Overwatch as well. While most of the projects are still in the early stages of production, it sounds like Netflix might soon become a hub for video game-based animations, and it won’t be surprising if the trend continues.
Overall, Cyberpunk Edgerunners speaks to the confidence that CD Projekt Red has in the world that is being built within Cyberpunk 2077, and if anything, the announcement should only build further anticipation for the game. While Edgerunners might not be released until 2022, you can expect to see Cyberpunk 2077 hit shelves on November 19.
