Tabletop RPG and prime geek content producers Critical Role recently published its Value Statement & Community Principles decree, summarizing the beliefs and values the company holds near and dear to its heart. The statement covers CR’s core values of positive storytelling and sharing the love of games and gaming with others, along with always exhibiting respect, the importance of healthy discussion and boundaries, accountability, and, of course, having fun.
If you’ve watched any amount of Critical Role broadcasts since the stream began in 2015, then you may be well acquainted with CR’s quality content. That quality content is derived from each member of CR, both in front of and behind the cameras. This statement, while being itself a new thing, is actually not new; it’s what CR has been presenting and exemplifying from the start. And this isn’t the final, set-in-stone version of the company’s collective values, as the statement solidly asserts that CR will regularly review and make any necessary changes “to ensure that they are relevant and up-to-date with community standards.”
The first half of the statement conveys CRs core values, which are firmly rooted in believing in the positive impact of storytelling, sharing the love of games with others, staying curious and always learning, and in leaving the world better than we found it. CR relates through the statement the mutual respect and passion each member of the company has, for each other and for their fans and audience. Sharing their adventures in gaming is their primary path for this endeavor, whether it’s CRs flagship show Talks Machina, Critter Hug, that other show they have called Critical Role, or any of their previous and future shows.
CR speaks directly to their community of Critters in the second half of the statement, declaring the principles, guidelines, and accountability measures they believe in and want for the community. As you would expect, harassment, discrimination, hateful conduct and speech, and such other negative actions won’t be tolerated. Just as CR’s players and their characters conduct in every broadcast, the statement relays their belief in and desire for clear personal and professional boundaries and respectful, open conversation, all supported and strengthened by the common love for having fun.
“Whether you are a seasoned adventurer or you are entirely new — you belong here. We encourage you to engage (or not engage) with our stories in whatever way feels best for you.”
