Campaign 2 episode 98 of Critical Role began relatively slow but then finished off extremely intense in an unusually long 5-hour episode. This week’s episode contained an a cappella cover, spell-naming discourse, shipping (both figuratively and literally), and an all-out battle that results in some heavy consequences. Here are a few of the best moments of C2 E98 of Critical Role.
Warning: HUGE spoilers beyond this point!

Ashley Sings the D&D Beyond Theme Song
Due to Ashley Johnson’s absence from several episodes of Critical Role for the filming of the TV show she acted in (Blindspot), she tends to be a bit out of the know about some CR things. One of which was the D&D Beyond theme song Sam Riegel had written. The ad spot for D&D Beyond this week was Ashley’s attempt at singing the theme song a cappella, given just the lyrics, and we think she did a pretty good job!
Sam Ships Fjord x Jester
Fjorester is a pretty popular ship, and clearly no other member of the cast ships it more than Sam Riegel. From the moment that Fjord chases after Jester when she leaves the group to check on her mom to them both getting dinner together when the Mighty Nein decides to eat separately, Sam is eagerly expressing his delight the entire time (quite honestly, I am right there with him).
Widogast’s Vault of Amber
This past week’s episode of Talks Machina, Critical Role’s talk show where one-two guests from the campaign answer questions and talk about the events of the previous week’s episode, Sam had been ranting about how all of Caleb’s spells were named after himself and not any other members of the party. Sam references that in this episode in a hilarious jab at Caleb, which makes for a great moment.
Fjord Takes His Last Breath
Character deaths in the Mighty Nein happen every once in a while, usually amended by a quick Revivify spell. The only character that had not been saved in the party was Mollymauk, the bloodhunter tiefling that Taliesin had roleplayed before his now firbolg cleric Caduceus.
The stakes rose this episode when Fjord repeatedly fell unconscious during the intense battle on their ship, culminating in his death. Because the episode ran long, Matt ended it before anyone from the Mighty Nein could attempt to save Fjord, but we hope that the party can bring him back in next week’s episode.
Poor Orly
Following Fjord’s unfortunate death was Orly, a tortle who served as a navigator for the Mighty Nein’s ship and was a character jointly created by Matt Mercer and the Critter community, met his end to the followers of Uk’otoa (Uk’otoa) just as Fjord had. Like Fjord, we hope that in next week’s episode, the Mighty Nein can save Orly as well.
