Control has tons of secrets, mystery, other dimensions, and other types of weird stuff. After all, this is a game where a fridge killed someone. Still, even after a dope main storyline and two DLCs, many questions have been left unanswered. One of the biggest ones is Ahti – the odd janitor who likes to call Jesse his assistant even though she is the Director.

Throughout the game, players learn that this character is way more than just a simple mortal. Sadly, he leaves for a vacation at the end of the main story and is yet to be seen again. So if you’re hungry for some answers, here are some things you might not know about Ahti.

10 Jesse Can Wear Ahti’s Clothes

Well, technically, they aren’t literally Ahti’s clothes, but you can unlock the janitor’s assistant outfit. It looks almost identical to the one Ahti wears when cleaning the Oldest House.

To unlock this outfit, all you have to do is check the corkboard in the Janitor’s Office to obtain more side missions related to janitors’ duty. There are six missions in total and completing all of them will unlock the outfit.

9 He Has Friends In The Alan Wake Universe

The Oldest House is full of secrets, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that it has a labyrinth with shifting corridors inside the building. The only way to actually get through this maze is by being bound to the Ashtray and Cigarette object. Or is it?

Ahti can walk through the maze freely; this is likely due to him having a very special walkman that plays the song Take Control by the Old Gods of Asgard. If that name sounds familiar, that’s because that band appears in the Alan Wake universe. Moreover, when Ahti gives the tape to Jesse, he says it’s a “present from my friends to you.”

8 He Is Probably Finnish

Ahti’s origin is just another one in the huge list of mysteries surrounding the Oldest House. All the FBC knows is that he appeared one day and started to take care of the place. Still, it is heavily implied that Ahti is some kind of paranormal entity himself.

And while it isn’t clear what Ahti is, at least fans know where he is from. This janitor speaks with a strong Finnish accent and uses many Finnish idioms he tries to translate to English, often confusing Jesse in the process.

7 Ahti Is An Award-Winning Performance

While Ahti seems like an odd character, there’s something about him that makes you trust the guy, no question asked. Even Jesse thinks it herself saying the Ahti is a friendly face just mere seconds after meeting him for the first time.

A large part of this character’s charisma comes from the actor who played him in real life: Martti Suosalo. This guy is so talented he even recorded a live studio version of “Hero’s Tango” for his role. All the hard work paid off as Suosalo won a BAFTA Games Award in a Supporting Role for his performance as Ahti.

6 He Might Be Affiliated With The Board

The game doesn’t explain exactly what or who “The Board” is. All players know is that some powerful paranatural entities constitute this board and that they are in charge of deciding who is worthy enough to be the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Control (basically acting like the Director’s boss).

There is a strong theory that Ahti might be a member of the board or at least affiliated with them at some level. This is confirmed not only by the fact that Ahti is allowed to live and move in the Oldest House as he please, but by the fact that he calls the Director’s position as his “assistant.” The board is sort of like a boss entity for the Director, so by saying this…

5 He Is Connected To The Foundation

Nobody knows where Ahti came from or even when. It isn’t clear if he appeared one day in the Oldest House or if he was always there and one day someone found him. Still, he’s just there, taking care of the place as an unassuming janitor would.

One of the most curious things he says is that after Jesse is done cleaning up the place, he will vacation in no other place than The Foundation. However, this place isn’t a sunny beach or a fishing lake. Instead, the Foundation consists of various caves and rock formations where the Astral Plane has permanently leaked. A rather weird place for a vacation, don’t you agree?

4 The VHS Cassette Tape Was Created Because Of Ahti

The FBC is in charge of investigating paranormal events and creatures, so when Ahti showed up one day out of the blue, you better bet the Director ordered to investigate him with all the resources he had at his disposal.

However, things didn’t go as planned. While trying to record Ahti’s activities in a VHS Cassette Tape, the object became altered, thus creating an altered object in the process. This incident raised more questions regarding this type of object – specifically if they are created randomly or intentionally by paranormal beings.

3 He Has Powers, But They Aren’t Specified

While players don’t see Ahti doing half the things Jesse can do like levitating or using telekinesis, fans of Control know the janitor definitely has power. He knew Jesse was coming even though the place was under lock-down and can move all over the place as he pleases.

Moreover, from the first moments of the game, Ahti can read Jesse’s thoughts and answer her aloud (even if she doesn’t realize it). Finally, there’s the fact that Ahti has the walkman that lets someone get through the Ashtray Maze – something people thought was only possible by being bound to the same object that created the maze in the first place.

2 He Can Resist The Hiss Without An HRA

When Jesse first enters the Oldest House, the place is filled with Hiss-infested agents. It’s up to her to clean up the place and take control of the situation. Since Jesse has a direct connection to Polaris, she is less susceptible to being controlled by the Hiss.

However, the other FBC agents don’t have the same luck, so they need to use an HRA (Hedron Resonance Amplifiers) to keep the Hiss away. Jesse isn’t the only one who can roam the place HRA free; Ahti can resist the Hiss without any extra help. This lends further credence to the theory that Ahti is an entity of some kind.

1 He Might Be A Finnish God

There’s plenty of evidence pointing out that Ahti is from Finland. However, there is a huge difference between being from somewhere and being a member of that culture’s folklore. “Ahti” is the name of the ancient Finnish god of the sea and fishing. This means that Control’s Ahti might be a manifestation of that god in the game.

Moreover, him being a deity or some sort of “god” would explain his powers and abilities. Finally, Ahti being friends with “the Old Gods of Asgard” could be a reference to his godly origins.
