We’re just days away from Biomutant releasing, and for some reason, Conan O’Brien gets to be the first one to broadcast himself hands-on with the actual game. Everything up until this point has been pre-recorded footage from developer Experiment 101, but now we actually get to see how Biomutant really plays courtesy of a late-night talk show host.

Conan is not the ideal person to see playing Biomutant–his segment is called “Clueless Gamer,” after all, but his gameplay does reveal more about Biomutant’s plot and setting than we had previously, and his co-host JB Smoove seems to know what he’s doing at least.

There are some slight spoilers ahead, so if you want to play Biomutant without knowing what’s coming, best to skip the next few paragraphs.

JB is first to take up the controller and play through Biomutant’s tutorial stage. He creates his character and before long is confronted by a giant beast wielding a club, which he dispatches without much difficulty. Then he hands over the controller to Conan, where things go south fairly quickly.

Luckily for Conan, the next part of the game appears to be a flashback. We find out that the player character learned Wung-Fu from their mother, who drowns under tragic circumstances. At least, they certainly looked tragic.

Next, JB is back at the helm and controls a giant mecha suit to take on the first World Eater boss, Jumbo Puff, who eats the player and then promptly poops them out. So if you were wondering about the tone of Biomutant, Jumbo Puff pretty much sums it up.

One thing that we certainly noticed throughout the game was that the narrator seemed to be talking a lot–something that Conan notes in his final thoughts. “I think this game would be perfect with a little less talking,” he said. “And when I say a little less I mean a lot less.”

Conan also felt that Biomutant was “way too long and seemed to have no point.” Although, we should point out that the segment is called “Clueless Gamer,” so he’s probably exaggerating.

Biomutant arrives on Tuesday, May 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with increased performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
