Musician Frank Klepacki is something of a legend in the video game world. His work for Westwood Studios, particularly his iconic work on the Command & Conquer series, is still talked about today.
So, when the studio that’s made up of ex-Westwood devs is making a game that’s heavily based on an old Command & Conquer spinoff, it only makes sense to call in the guy whose music helped define the series.
A recent ‘Designer Diary’ post on Earthbreakers’ Steam page reveals just what Klepacki has in mind for the upcoming FPS/RTS hybrid, and it’s a fascinating look inside how his musical mind works.
According to Klepacki, the first idea was to mix electronic music with orchestra instruments, but he soon decided that he wanted to take a less-conventional approach.
“This has just been done to death and didn’t feel particularly special,” Klepacki said. “So we went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea about drawing influence from something like the Dusk til Dawn soundtrack. That in turn triggered some other ideas for me where I thought, what if I tried a blend of classic rock, rockabilly, blues, and early punk?”
That may seem like a bit of an odd mix, but it never really pays to second-guess Klepacki. Plus, he’s made it clear that he’s taking the time to figure out which elements work best with different parts of the game. For instance, he says that the rockabilly music will be mostly confined to the character select screen, music with a punk influence is played when the player loses a match, and the match-win screen will play a blues tune in a major key.
While we haven’t had the chance to hear any of these tunes, Klepacki has a stellar track record, so this game is one to keep an eye, and an ear, out for.
