If Blizzard took a vote, Zul’Gurub would be everyone’s favorite Classic World of Warcraft raid. It’s set in a tropical jungle, populated by trolls that are equally colorful and vicious, and is filled to the brim with fantastic loot. Plus, the design is an open concept with an outdoor location, so you can ride your mount through the instance and cut down on the travel time.

It’s not just the scenery and shiny purples that players love about Zul’Gurub. It’s the various other items that drop, precious to the citizens of Azeroth but even more coveted by the Zandalari Trolls, and there’s a wide variety. Most of the time it’s about grinding rep with one of Azeroth’s most ancient factions. Here’s what these items are, what they do, and how to use them.

10 Coins

Grinding reputation with the ancient and powerful Zandalari Trolls is a big incentive. These secretive Trolls are neutral, and they welcome aid from Alliance players as much as those of the Horde. So many different coins drop in Zul’Gurub that we could almost have a list just for them alone. Players return them to Yojamba Isle, where they can turn them in to gan reputation with the resident Zandalari Trolls.

9 Bijous

These are similar to coins in that you use them on Yojamba Isle, but instead of turning them in for rep, you use a temple alter to turn them into Zandalar Honor Tokens. These are used as currency with the reputation vendor on the island in exchange for special items, depending on your own level of reputation with the tribe.

8 Punctured Voodoo Dolls

Every so often, your raid party will come across a smoldering pile of purple skulls as you explore Zul’Gurub. These yield several unique items, one of the most coveted is this Punctured Voodoo Doll. They are class-specific and have two uses. The more common is to obtain another special item and bring both of them to a ghostly NPC located in the raid in exchange for a powerful enchantment.

If you read the description of the doll, however, you get instructions for another option that involves a rotating boss, a powerful alchemical secret, and a special event that changes every week. Succeed in this complex quest to complete your class tier set with a powerful trinket.

7 Nat’s Measuring Tape

Here’s yet another reason to level your fishing skill. If you have, you probably know what this is, and you definitely know what to do with it. Not everyone is familiar with Nat Pagle, but his character became more popular with every expansion. He’s always connected with his favorite pastime, fishing, and this is no exception. Bring the tape to Nat at his island hideaway in Dustwallow Marsh and he’ll tell you the secret of summoning the most elusive boss in Zul’Gurub, Gahz’ranka.

6 Mudskunk Fish

And that secret is the rare, reclusive, and disgusting Mudskunk Fish. That’s right, Gahz’ranka loves these things and you need them if you want to lure him to the surface of the swamp where he lives and loot his corpse. There are a few hurdles you have to clear to get to that point. When you bring that measuring tape to Nat, he’ll give you the Mudskunk Lure. Now you can see the special spawn pools of Mudskunk Fish. Fish them up, collect five, and combine them with the lure to summon the elusive boss.

5 Blood Scythes

There are some special items for Herbalists in Zul’Gurub, and the Blood Scythe is one of them. The Blood Scythe is only found in the mysterious hoodoo piles that you find throughout the dungeon, and when one appears, the raid leader will ask the Herbalists to roll for it.

There are herbs galore in Zul’Gurub, but if you pick herbs while carrying a Blood Scythe, there’s a chance to find a bit of Blood Vine. This precious plant is used by Tailors to make the Bloodvine Garb Set, the best gear a Warlock can have.

4 Primal Hakkari Loot

Oh, those precious purples. In ZG, it’s not just a question of waiting for gear to drop and then rolling on it. Special purple items drop that look like gear but aren’t, which can be confusing. Depending on your reputation level with the Zandalari Tribe, you can exchange the items for special gear intended for your class. There’s a specific vendor for each class on the island and only they can exchange or upgrade your Zul’Gurub gear.

3 The Heart Of Hakkar

It looks like a trinket at first, but when you read the description you realize that it isn’t gear at all. The Heart of Hakkar is an item that only has one use, and that’s to exchange it for an actual trinket. The real challenge is winning the roll.

The trinket is intended for spellcasters, but depending on the composition of your raid, other classes might be able to roll on it. This is one of those situations where you need to pay attention to the raid chat or the voices in Discord.

2 Zanza The Restless

This is a “who” as opposed to a “what,” but still a bit of a mystery. This NPC is who you need to bring some of these mysterious items to in order to get those high-level enchants that you read about in the guide. It’s important to know that this character isn’t on the Yojamba Isles, He’s waiting on top of one of the pyramids in spirit form, hence his name, and you can only speak to him if you’re visiting the instance as part of a raid.

1 Primal Hakkari Idol

This item is one of the ingredients you need to bring to Zanza the Restless to get that enchant. he other is that Punctured Voodoo Doll. Like so many of the other items you find in ZG, the exact details of this enchant depend on your class. Spellcasters get buffs to spell power and stamina, for example. You can get the enchant and apply it to your chosen piece of gear at a later time, in case you get it before those other special purples drop.
