Classic LucasArts games including Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle will no longer be exclusive to PS4. All three popular games will be available for Xbox later this year.
The news broke on Twitter after Tim Schafer told an IGN reporter that three of his classic games would break out of PS4 exclusivity. The studio responsible for Tim Schafer’s games, Double Fine, joined the Xbox Game Studios family recently. The move was initially announced at E3, during an Xbox press conference.
Originally, the games appeared on PS4, PS Vita and PC, but were unavailable for Xbox. Since their release, they have all been remastered and re-released but were still not brought out for Xbox. Double Fine was acquired by Xbox Game Studios to add games by established developers to the platform, and the Game Pass. The three titles will launch in their remastered form, with the updated graphics and sound that a remaster brings. The remastered version of Grim Fandango includes repainted, high-res character art; new and dynamic lighting; the old score re-recorded by a full orchestra; a concept art browser; and over two hours of commentary by the devs.
Double Fine is known for its quirky and stylistic art styles. They are the creators of excellent games like Psychonauts, Psychonauts 2, Broken Age, and the publisher of fantastic titles like Knights and Bikes. The studio was founded by LucasArts dev, Tim Schafer, who later left LucasArts to create Double Fine with some of his former LucasArts colleagues in 2000. This meant he could continue to focus on his beloved adventure games, despite LucasArts moving more into the action genre. Xbox Game Studios later acquired double Fine in 2019.
With Xbox Game Studios now having ownership of Double Fine, it was only a matter of time before Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle were playable on Xbox consoles. This is great news for fans of the famous point-and-click games, and a smart move for Xbox Game Studios. It’s excellent news to hear as the pandemic continues to change how players live their lives.
