Developer Supercell has reached yet another milestone with its popular mobile title Clash Royale, as the lifetime spending total surpasses $3 billion according to Sensor Tower. The news comes a mere four years after launching in 2016, and although spending has decreased recently, the future still looks bright for the game.
The amount is impressive for a mobile title and should be the envy of virtually any other mobile game developer in the world, and yet, this figure pales in comparison to Supercell’s other mobile title, Clash of Clans, which has seen over $7 billion in revenue since launching in 2014.
Both titles have benefited from the introduction of a seasonal battle pass, known as a Pass Royale within Clash Royale. First introduced in January of 2019, the Pass Royale is now in its thirteenth season, offering players several in-game benefits and cosmetics for their Towers, emotes, arena skins, new cards, and more.
Sensor Tower states that the majority of player spending in Clash Royale has come primarily from the United States, totaling $925.4 million, equivalent to nearly 31% of all revenue. Germany and China come in second and third.
These figures are a bit surprising because they do not include any Latin American countries, however there is a large base of players there, particularly with regards to competitive players. Although the game is popular all over the world, it is surprising to see spending is lower in this region.
Supercell is undoubtedly impressed with the performance of its game, but the question now is where Clash Royale goes from here. As mentioned, the game continues to draw an esports crowd, but player spending has declined since 2017. With a battle pass system already put into place, Supercell will need to consider something radically different if it aims to reinvigorate its player base.
On this note, it is surprising to see that Supercell has not made any major efforts to tie-in Clash of Clans to Clash Royale, and it seems like an opportunity that is going to waste with each passing day. Activision has recently created what can only be considered a perfect, self-contained ecosystem of gaming within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. By tying in promotional cosmetics and cross progression to its stand alone, free games Call of Duty: Mobile and Warzone, players are encouraged and rewarded to play all three games to maximize their rewards.
It appears the simplest crossover would be to award cosmetics or a small amount of premium currency for completing certain activities in each game. Long-term goals like upgrading a Town Hall to level 13 in Clash of Clans could reward resources like coins or chests in Clash Royale and would keep players constantly moving between the two titles. In any case, this milestone is revenue is nothing but impressive, and we are excited to see what lies ahead for the game.
