Chris Jericho has provided wrestling fans with an update on AEW’s first-ever video game, including who from the company is involved in getting it off the ground.

The wrestling business and the video game industry have been crossing over and working together for decades. Not just via wrestling games in which fans can assume the identities of their favorite wrestlers, but more recently through those same wrestlers starting up their very own gaming channels on Twitch and YouTube. Xavier Woods, Kenny Omega, and Asuka are just a few of those who have done exactly that.

However, that special relationship between wrestling and gaming was dealt an almost fatal blow last year. The release of WWE 2K20 did not go down well, and you can check out what we here at TheGamer thought of it via our review. As for the rest of the world, the glitches and problems with 2K20 had some labeling it awful, claiming it to be a far-from finished game.

As 2K works on repairing that damage, fans of wrestling games have been offered a glimmer of hope via new wrestling promotion AEW. AEW arrived on the scene in 2019 and has been putting on a terrific alternative for wrestling fans who have become tired of the status quo. The promotion is also working on a top-secret video game, something the first-ever AEW Champion provided an update on recently.

“We want to ensure that the video game is done right and it is not a half-assed effort,” Jericho explained, which felt like a thinly-veiled shot at WWE 2K20. “Since people have been waiting anxiously for the game, we want to ensure it is really good.” Jericho also revealed that AEW referee Aubrey Edwards has been working on the project. Edwards has a background in video game development.

Omega also spoke about the game back in August but was careful not to reveal the developer AEW is working alongside to bring it to life. The Cleaner did say that everyone involved wants it to encapsulate what was so special about No Mercy on the Nintendo 64, one of the most popular wrestling games of all time to this day. 2K devs have said the same about WWE 2K22, and since there’s a chance the two will hit the market at the same time, the wrestling game genre could be in for quite the rebirth this time next year.
