Chinese social media platform Weibo is set to build a Shanghai-based team to compete in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, according to a report from CSGO2ASIA. The lineup will reportedly be made up of former Invictus and EHOME players.
Weibo is a popular social media website in China, reporting nearly 500 million active users in 2019. Many Chinese esports organizations use the platform for announcements, reaching fans of League of Legends, Dota 2, and other popular esports titles. CS:GO has seen a steady rise in popularity in China since the introduction of the Perfect World client in 2017.
As reported by CSGO2ASIA, Weibo’s team will mostly be made up of players who formerly represented Invictus Gaming and EHOME. Tzu-Chi “Marek” Huang, QingHui “FIOURN” Kong, and Russian native Egor “killmatic” Storozhok will reportedly be joined by ZhiTao “Drea3er” Zhang and Jason “f0rsakeN” Susanto. f0rsakeN is the younger brother of former TyLoo AWPer Kevin “xccurate” Susanto.
Weibo partnered with Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, along with Wolves Esports Club, in 2019 to compete in FIFA as Wolves Weibo Esports. Weibo also sponsors a competitive PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS team.
It is currently unclear when Weibo plans to unveil its entry into Counter-Strike, or when the team’s first competitive outing would be. Other Chinese teams are preparing to compete in DreamHack Masters Spring Asia, which is slated to begin on June 2nd.
