Snowboard down a mountain in pursuit of escape llamas in The Alto Collection, coming soon to the Epic Games Store. And it’ll be free, too.

Okay, honestly, the llama thing is really not central to the whole Alto experience. Yes, you can chase down escaped llamas in order to gain additional points, but that’s just one of the many things you can do to get coins and buy new stuff.

But I’m getting ahead of myself: The Alto Collection is actually two games in one. The first is Alto’s Adventure, a mobile game that originally came out in 2015 from three-man Toronto indie studio Snowman. The name comes from Alto’s setting, which is snowboarding down a snowy mountain.

Alto’s Adventure is an endless runner where you keep sliding down a procedurally-generated mountain while trying to do fancy snowboard tricks. The game was inspired by the zen and spiritual nature of Journey combined with the cool kickflips of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Doing tricks in Alto’s Adventure will get you a higher score which can then be used to purchase upgrades to eventually travel further and do more cool things.

Released in 2015 for mobile before being ported to Windows PC. Alto’s Adventure received critical acclaim upon release, with folks praising its gorgeous art style, placid atmosphere, and sublime soundtrack.

In 2016, Snowman got a fourth member of their little squad and renamed themselves to Team Alto. The sequel, Alto’s Odyssey, was released in 2018 and added new weather effects, tornadoes, wall-riding, water, and falling platforms. Oh, and it was a desert mountain now instead of a snow-covered mountain.

Both these lovely mobile games are now being combined into a single console/PC game in The Alto Collection. Graphics have been updated to support 4K resolutions, but the original music and handcrafted audio that gave Alto its charm remains.

The Alto Collection arrives on August 13th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on the Epic Games Store. You can even get it free on Epic between August 13th and August 20th. A Nintendo Switch version will be coming later this year.
