Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have full access to Celeste for a week, though only for Japanese accounts. Released in 2018, Celeste is unarguably one of the best-received independent games ever made. The gameplay is very challenging, but rewarding. The story, on the surface, is about a young woman’s journey to the top of a mountain. However, the journey is as much internal as it is external, something that resonated with many players. Its Chapter 9 DLC, “Farewell,” released last September.
Nintendo has announced Celeste will be available as a free trial for Nintendo Switch Online users. As translated by Destructoid, the full game will be available from May 18 to May 24 free of charge. However, this promotion is only for those who have Switch Online through a Japanese Nintendo Switch account.
This isn’t the first time Nintendo gave a game a free trial for Switch Online subscribers. Back in March, the company made ARMS available, that time for North American subscribers as well. However, there have been more free trials in Japan than North America. It is certainly disappointing that Celeste’s trial appears to be a Japanese exclusive. For those who do get to play, Celeste can be beaten in under a week with dedication, making the promotion quite a notable one.
Celeste is certainly worth a play, free or not. For completionists, collecting the strawberries adds another layer of challenge to an already intense experience.
