Made in Chelsea’s James Taylor has revealed that not only did he not sell a PS5 for £1200, he never actually had one at all.

Not getting your hands on a PS5 while others can is frustrating enough. Seeing people sell those consoles on for a monster profit just magnifies that feeling exponentially. The console can be found on resale sites for as much as $1600, and UK retailer CEX is selling used PS5s it has acquired for £750 ($998) a pop. Proof that many people bought a PS5 just so they could sell it right away.

That’s why one celebrity’s ill-thought-out Instagram post generated quite a bit of heat over the weekend. James Taylor, of Made in Chelsea fame, revealed that he had been gifted a PS5 by Sony. That was annoying enough, however, he then decided to add that he had sold the console for £1200 profit since he preferred his PS4.

The backlash was so fierce that Taylor removed the post. He has also gone on to reveal via a statement to Metro that the whole thing was just a prank designed to poke fun at the current influencer market. Since Taylor is an influencer himself, that’s probably not the wisest idea. “PlayStation didn’t gift me a PS5 (are you mad? I’ve only got 43.9K followers, PlayStation doesn’t even know who I am),” the statement reads.

Taylor added that the PS5 he snapped a pic of belonged to a friend and the most up-to-date console he actually owns is a PS4. Honestly, we should have smelled a rat when we noticed he had referred to his theoretical new console as a Playingstation 5 in the original post. No need to be angry at Taylor for selling a PS5, but we can still be angry at him for playing such a stupid prank.
