Fans of Netflix’s animated adaptation of the long-running Castlevania video game series need not wait much longer for its continuation. According to writer and executive producer Warren Ellis, Castlevania will return to Netflix this summer.
Making the announcement via Twitter, Ellis didn’t provide an exact date for the show’s premiere. However, he has confirmed that the second season will contain eight episodes, as previously planned by Netflix after the successful release of Castlevania’s first four episodes. Fans will most likely be pleased to hear the release is still on-track, as the series originally underwent long-term development hell after being announced in 2007.
The new season is likely to reignite passion for Castlevania among some fans, but it’s clear that others never lost it. The game series hasn’t had any new releases in quite some time, with the closest and most recent thing being a pachinko machine based on the game that was released last year. A console or handheld title hasn’t been seen since 2014, and Konami has yet to reveal any future plans to continue the core series or even remaster some of the older ones. Some fans have taken matters into their own hands, going so far as to release an unofficial first-person remake of Castlevania’s original NES title.
Showrunner Adi Shankar’s Castlevania adapation has received a great deal of praise, but his other planned series is yet to be seen. Shankar previously announced that his next project would be an Assassin’s Creed animated series, though nothing has been revealed since the announcement. However, Shankar explained that the scripts for the second season of Castlevania were completed last year, so it’s likely to have taken precedence over the new project.
Netflix has so far seen success with video game projects like Castlevania and Final Fantasy 14: Daddy of Light. If Season 2 of Castlevania does as well - or better - than the first, it’s likely that more video game adaptations will come to the streaming video service in the future.
Castlevania Season 2 will release on Netflix in the summer of 2018.
