Cardcaptor Sakura will be getting a mobile puzzle game by Bushiroad this Summer called Repaint Record. It will have an original story attached to it that’s set in the canon of the sequel anime, Clear Card.
We shouldn’t expect the unexpected though. The gameplay is very similar to puzzle games like Bejeweled or Candy Crush Saga, in which you’re lining up matching colors together. However, it looks slightly more interesting than the average puzzle tat on mobile by having 3D animations on the top of the screen. And by playing the game, you can unlock new costumes for Sakura. Like many other free-to-play mobile titles, there will be purchasable upgrades and time savers like time/gem destroyers. Get ready to summon The Money Gouge clow card.
According to PlayerOne (translated), the last mobile game Happiness Memories was a big flop and servers closed down less than a year after its worldwide release. The developer is likely hoping this will do better; it is a big franchise around the world after all. It makes sense that Bushiroad is chasing after the puzzle market on mobile as Candy Crush Saga is still pulling in millions of players 8 years after the game released.

While the mobile market is often overlooked by the core gaming community, this form of entertainment represents 60% of video game play among adult gamers, according to the Entertainment Software Association. The organization also found that 76% of female millennial gamers most often play casual games. Cardcaptor Sakura: Repaint Record could be going after that market, as this anime is very nostalgic for a subsection of this audience.
Cardcaptor Sakura started airing in the US as Cardcaptors in the year 2000 for the WB Kids network, and two years later, it aired in Canada on Teletoon. Does anyone else feel old? While the English version censored quite a bit from its Japanese counterpart (for the better, yikes), it succeeded at telling a compelling story for the Western audience. The animation, the coolness of the clow cards, and the action made it fun to watch as a kid. Now, you can relive those memories on Netflix!
Perhaps one day, we’ll get a new Cardcaptors console game like My Hero One’s Justice or Fairy Tail in the future.
